Massage is a healing technique that has been used for centuries. As far back as 3000BC massage has been referenced as a way to restore and heal the body. Ancient cultures believed that illness was caused by an imbalance between the person and the environment. Massage was believed to help restore the body's natural balance and promote healing. It was first used in India by the Hindu's in Ayurveda "life health" medicine and massage was used to relieve pain, heal injuries and restore the body. These methods were passed down through generations. In 2700 BC in China, they began to use massage as well as other holistic treatments. The Yellow Emperor's Classic Book of Internal Medicine was a text written in China about alternative medicine such as acupuncture, massage and acupressure and is still referenced today. The Ancient Egyptians depicted massage in wall paintings in tombs. They also added their own treatments and they are credited with developing reflexology. In Ancient Greece, Hippocrates, also known as the "Father of Medicine," was the first to take massage and combine it with diet, exercise, fresh air and music as a prescription for illnesses which isn't far from the holistic lifestyle we are told to aim for today. Throughout history massage has been a staple ingredient in the treatment of illness and disease. There was a decline when pharmacology took off but today it is incredibly popular once again.
Modern massage has so many health benefits. As well as relaxation and stress reduction, massage increases serotonin which boosts your mood and, in turn, will boost your mental health and help with focus. It is used as a therapy in the treatment of pain whilst also improving flexibility, posture, circulation and immunity. Whether you get massages regularly or as a treat once in a while, there is no denying that massage has been added to and perfected over the years to become an intrinsic part of healing and wellbeing in society today.
So many businesses offer massage treatments. Spa packages can offer different types of massage, sports therapists use it as part of treatment, and it's even a popular activity for hen parties!
