It's growing so rapidly because it's minimally or non-invasive and the treatments work incredibly well. Aesthetic medicine shouldn't be confused with plastic surgery, although some treatments can overlap. Aesthetic medicine is a broad term which encompasses a huge variety of treatments. Also known as cosmetic medicine, aesthetic medicine aims to enhance and refresh patients so they have higher contentment with how they look. Treatments are elective and should only be performed on healthy people by qualified doctors, nurses or dentists. It is a combination of science and artistry that results in the person feeling refreshed and enhanced, but also still looking like themselves.
Aesthetic medicine usually focuses on the face, neck, hands and décolleté. Some of the concerns aesthetics aims to alleviate include sun damaged skin, lines and wrinkles, scarring, uneven skin tone, anti-ageing and many more. The potential treatments are used to complement and enhance the facial features including lips, cheeks, nose, chin and jaw. As we get older our skin loses elasticity and can sag so there are treatments to preserve and maintain younger skin to help slow the ageing process. Other concerns that aesthetics can help with include hair removal/replacement, unwanted body fat, excessive sweating and more.
An aesthetician can perform a variety of treatments including dermal fillers, botox, chemical peels, microdermabrasion and so many more. An aesthetician should ideally be registered on a voluntary register which shows that they meet the set standards of training, skill and insurance to perform cosmetic treatments. These include the JCCP and Save Face.
